Recreating oneself after being broken down Worrying that you are trapped in patterns from the pastĮnduring pain and sadness to come out stronger Reached the top, but not sure where to go from thereįeeling stuck and unsure about the future Trying to achieve something that is out of reachĪn idea or goal that cannot be reconciledįeeling like there is something missing or unknownĭestroying progress that has just been made ![]() Rebuilding yourself after being broken down Learning from mistakes and taking things one step at a time The struggle continues, even though it seems endlessįinding strength and passion from difficult experiencesĭetermined to keep fighting, even in the face of defeat Ready in the depth for a stone that's long goneīeing prepared for something that has already passed Looking for joy or love where it cannot be foundįeeling unprepared for a difficult situation Trying to accomplish something that is unlikely to happen Spider weaving webs for a catch that won't come In the end, the singer describes himself as a phoenix rising up from ash and ember, born again from the heartbreak and struggles he has faced.Īm I confused and disconnected from reality He knows that he will never make it out alive, but he refuses to surrender. He is determined to keep moving forward, taking things day by day and learning the hard way. Despite all of this confusion and uncertainty, the singer does not give up. He asks if it is too late, wondering if he has climbed the ladder to the last rung and if he is simply going to finish where he started from. The singer feels like he is swimming in a river that is manmade, demolishing a road that was just paved, and trying to catch a junebug in late December. The singer wonders if he is reaching out for something he cannot grab, something infinitely splitting into two halves. He feels ready for something that is long gone, and feels like he is pulling roses from a dead bush. The imagery is dark the singer compares himself to a spider weaving webs for a catch that never comes, and to a soldier running late for an ambush. He questions whether he is seeing double or withdrawn, wondering if he is depositing lyrics into a love song to no avail. The lyrics to Augustana's song "Ash and Ember" describe the singer's feelings of confusion and uncertainty about life. Like a phoenix I was born from ash and ember Had to take it day by day, had to feel the heartbreak Is the future just the past that I'll never outrun Have I climbed the ladder to the last rungĪm I simply gonna finish where I started from It's like trying to catch a junebug in late December Is there something I forgot that I can't rememberĪm I swimming in a river that was manmade Something infinitely splitting into two halves Like a phoenix rising up from ash and emberĪm I reaching out for something that I can't grab Had to take it day by day, had to learn the hard way I'll never make it out alive, but I won't surrender And the fire in my heart came from ash and emberĪnd every I step I take, got the devil to repay ![]()
